The Charitable organisation which has taken over responsibility for the waterway network from British Waterways. The west side of the Narrow Canal is administered by North West Waterways while the east side of the Narrow Canal, and the Broad Canal by Yorkshire & North East Waterways.

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal passes through the Council regions of Tameside, Oldham and Kirklees.
The Councils have long supported the restoration of the Canal and in doing so, have had to face their own particular engineering challenges to re-open the navigation.

The Calder Navigation Society (CNS) was formed in 1969 as an association of Boaters, Ramblers and others who are interested in promoting the use and sympathetic development of the waterways in the Calder Valley.
Formerly the Boat Museum Society, it changed in April 2018 to the Waterways Museum Society. The principal aim of the Society is the preservation of the historic boats, skills, knowledge and way of life of the waterways.
